We received a question from our community: “Why are you posting videos that make it seem like everything is okay in the North of Gaza?” It’s a valid inquiry, especially when the brutal reality of life on the ground is stark and undeniable. But there’s a deeper story unfolding—one that speaks to the resilience and humanity of children caught in unimaginable circumstances.
A Glimpse of Reality
Ahmed offers a heartbreaking yet human perspective. He shared, “After two days of closure, parents contacted us, pleading to reopen the tent school. They were desperate for their children to have some sense of normalcy, even in the middle of ongoing war.”
Where chaos reigns, our tent school becomes a lifeline—a brief sanctuary where children can escape the horrors that surround them. Parents are not just worried about their children’s education; they fear for their mental well-being. As Ahmed poignantly stated, “They feared their beloved children would lose their minds, overwhelmed by the violence and chaos.”
Normal Behaviour in an Abnormal Situation
Our tent school represents more than just an educational space. It is a refuge where children can experience fleeting moments of joy, laughter, and connection. “If our teachers and staff can offer our students even the sense of a few moments of ‘untouched reality, they’ve succeeded in helping to ease their trauma.” Ahmed explained, highlighting the vital role that these brief interludes play in the children’s lives.
Psychiatrists have advised us on the importance of creating these moments, underscoring the necessity of emotional relief in the face of relentless adversity. This is not about denying the truth of their existence; rather, it is about honouring their resilience and providing them with a semblance of joy amid despair.
Amplifying Voices
Our mission is clear: to amplify the voices of Gaza’s children. The videos we share are not a facade; they are a testament to the strength and resilience of the young ones who refuse to be defined solely by their circumstances. “Even if we die, even if your children die, we want them to die with a smile ,” the parents say, a powerful reminder that joy is a fundamental part of the human experience—even in the darkest times.
A question emerges: Don’t children in war zones deserve to have fun, just like every other child? The answer is unequivocally yes. Every child, regardless of their situation, has the right to laughter, play, and moments of joy.
We are Humans not Numbers!
It’s crucial to recognize that the children in Gaza are not mere statistics or symbols of suffering. They are vibrant and lovable individuals with hopes, dreams, and the desire to be seen as human beings.
In sharing their stories and images of “normal” life, we honour their humanity. We acknowledge that, despite their horrific reality, they are deserving of love, joy, and respect. As I write this, my heart aches for these children, and I long for the day I can hug them, to show them they are loved beyond measure.
Conclusion
In our quest to shed light on the plight of Gaza’s children, we must remember the importance of balance. Acknowledging the brutal reality does not negate the necessity for joy. By creating spaces for laughter and moments of normality, we are not escaping reality; we are affirming life in the face of death.
We hope you understand! And we are hoping for your continued solidarity and support.
